About

The Orkney Youth Music Forum was started in June 2009 and is based on the aims of the Youth Music Initiative. The OYMF is working to raise awareness of existing musical groups, identify areas for development, support isolated groups, encourage collaborative working among genres and sectors, and share resources and examples of good practice.

The aims of the Orkney Youth Music Forum are to improve awareness of and to coordinate youth music activities in the statutory, private and freelance areas of provision of all styles of music and to facilitate collaboration, joint learning and the introduction of new ideas.

Members of the OYMF are drawn from youth music providers such as teachers, development workers, tutors, freelancers, directors as well as young people. The age category for those young people that the Forum will cater for will be 25 years and under.
The OYMF and the Youth Music Forum Coordinators post are supported by the Scottish Arts Council through the Youth Music Initiative.

Gemma McGregor has been in post as Youth Music Forum Coordinator since June 2009. Gemma is well placed to assist with the bringing together of the many musical providers in Orkney as she has worked in most of Orkney’s schools and is, or has been, involved with many of the existing musical groups. Gemma works closely with the Saint Magnus Festival and the Orkney Folk Festival.

The OYMF meets every 3 months and includes live music and interviews with different Orkney music groups at each meeting.

If you are interested in being on the Forum, or would like music related info disseminated via the Forum, contact Gemma McGregor -
