Traditional Music Summer School

May 7, 2012 in Opportunities, Regional Events, Training Opportunities, events by admin

TintoSummerSchool

Tinto Summer School is held at Wiston Lodge at the foot of Tinto Hill in South Lanarkshire.

The school has been running since 2000 and this year due to the high demand (sold out on-line last year) they are running two summer schools (for high school students or those about to enter/leave high school) and a weekend (for 18-25s).

As well as learning from some of the best traditional music tutors available, participants also take part in outdoor activities, a fancy dress ceilidh, a BBQ and there’s loads of creativity, socialising, sessions and general fun. The school has found in particular that kids who are maybe “misfits” and have a tricky time at school often become the stars of the show. Because of the availability of the two weeks instead of one there are still plenty of places left so if you have any outlets you could tickle to help us publicise it that would be very helpful.

Go to www.tintosummerschool.com for more information and to book places.

Volunteers Wanted: Imaginate Festival 2012

May 1, 2012 in Opportunities, Other Youth Opportunities, events by admin

imaginatefestThe 2012 Bank of Scotland Imaginate Festival is looking for Volunteers!

Since 1989 this festival has staged some of the finest pieces of dance and theatre for children and young people from across the globe. Every year it looks for a group of enthusiastic and hardworking volunteers to help with the day to day running of the weeklong festival in Edinburgh, this year taking place between 7 – 14 May.

It’s a hugely exciting and rewarding week. Applicants don’t need to be available for the entire festival, and the host of social and networking events which run throughout the week make for a really enjoyable and creative experience.

If you think you might be interested in applying, or would like some more information, please email Volunteer Coordinator Alex Bird at volunteers@imaginate.org.uk, or visit the festival’s website at www.imaginate.org.uk/festival.

You can also find Imaginate on Facebook and Twitter.

Calling All Professional Rock, Pop and Jazz Musicians – Auditions

April 30, 2012 in Opportunities, events by admin

This June, music outreach organisation Live Music Now Scotland is heading to Film City, Glasgow to seek out the best of Scotland’s emerging professional rock, pop, indie and Jazz musicians.

Live Music Now supports up-and-coming bands and musicians at the start of their careers by providing them with paid performance opportunities in venues they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to visit, playing for a wide array of audiences. The charitable organisation is the largest provider of live music to the UK’s welfare, educational, justice and health sectors and brings great live music to those in society whose access to music is restricted.

There are currently 32 bands and ensembles on the Live Music Now scheme in Scotland, including pop and rock groups, singer-songwriters, a jazz quartet, operatic singers, classical chamber ensembles and Scottish traditional music groups. These groups perform to all sorts of audiences including children and young people who are vulnerable, at risk or with additional needs, young people and adults in the justice system, adults with learning and physical disabilities and older people in care.

At June’s auditions LMN is seeking out rock, pop and jazz musicians who would like to expand their performance experience, earn professional rates, gain support and training to develop their skills and, most importantly, bring the thrill of live music to those across the community.

Since their successful audition in February 2010, Stirling-based pop band Miniature Dinosaurs have given over 60 performances and workshops, including residencies at Donaldson’s, Scotland’s national school for children with hearing and communication disorders and many creative music-making projects for children in foster care.

‘We’ve had a fabulous time with Live Music Now over the past two years and got so much from the work that we’ve done in ways that we would never have imagined. We’d recommend it most highly for any bands who, like us, are starting their gigging careers and keen to get as much experience playing together as possible.’ Barry McLean, Miniature Dinosaurs

Wednesday 13 June 2012, Film City, Glasgow (Closing date Mon 14 May 2012)
